Snowfall in the Sierra Nevada
Published on: 07-12-2017

The ability to move from beach to the ski slopes is one of the many pleasures of living in Marbella and there are few other places in the world where such diverse activities are only within a few hours’ drive of each other. If this is your first winter in Marbella and you’re planning to explore the snow-covered pistes, there are some things to consider.

Remember to take plenty of layers of warm clothing with you. It might be a warm day in Marbella, but up in the Sierra Nevada it is about -2C during the day, and colder at night.

Don’t worry if you don’t already have ski clothing or skis or snowboards, as you can hire ski equipment at the Sierra Nevada resort. Learners can book classes and there is a crèche for younger children. You can also book accommodation through one of the ski resort websites and it is advisable to make your reservations early, especially if you are making a weekend visit, as it gets quite busy. You can also order ski passes online.

In addition to skiing and snowboarding, there are other activities available at the resort for families with children. Dreamland and Snow Garden in Borreguiles are at the top of a ‘Magic Carpet’ conveyor belt. Dreamland is an alternative to the crèche and offers care for children aged three to six years of age. The Dreamland play area is outside the Snow Garden chalet and when the conditions are right, the professional staff teaches children how to make gentle descents within the enclosed space.

And, if you don’t fancy skiing or snowboarding, there are other activities available, such as a 4WD off-roading and jeep tour. This includes a drink and a bite to eat in a snug panoramic restaurant at 2,500m, with incredible views of the highest mountains in mainland Spain. It’s great for families, children, couples, groups and those wanting a taste of adventure. Alternatively, there are guided trekking tours into the mountains, taking in Mulhacén, the highest peak in the sierras.

The Sierra Nevada website offers an excellent real time snow map.
