The best time of year to be in Marbella
Published on: 09-09-2017

There are many candidates for the favourite time of the year to visit or be in Marbella, and naturally not everybody’s will be the same, but some seasons and months really do stand out. The summer holiday months of July and especially August are the most visited, when the largest numbers of people – tourists mostly – come to the Costa del Sol. But for those in the know this is not the best time of year to be here.

The summer season is when holiday activity – and temperatures – are at a peak, but for many the slightly cooler spring and autumn months represent the crème de la crème of life in and around Marbella. September heralds the start of Europe’s longest golf season, which extends right through winter to June, ensuring that there is a steady flow of enthusiasts throughout the year. But it isn’t just golfers who enjoy the soft winters and warm, sun-kissed spring and autumn of this privileged corner of Europe – many a second homeowner visits at different times of the year to sample the always varying ambience and attractions that mark successive months.

For lovers of sport, September to June is ideal, yet is also a great time of year to venture into Andalucía and visit charming villages surrounded by gorgeous country scenery, explore historic cities such as Sevilla, Córdoba or Cádiz. The surfing capital of Tarifa – an hour west of Marbella, is a firm favourite from spring right through to autumn, while sherry-growing Jerez de la Frontera is particularly attractive around the harvest in September and the colourful horse fair in April – when the blossom in Seville marks it out as one of the prettiest cities in Europe.

October also hosts one of Marbella’s biggest events of the year; Marbella 4 Days Walking! On the 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th of October, walkers from all over the world discover the unknown sides of Marbella. ou can participate on all four days but it is also possible to choose the days that suit you most. In short: a perfect opportunity for a holiday!

Granada, meanwhile, draws many in autumn, when its dreamy views of the Alhambra with the white-capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada behind make it a particularly romantic city to visit. Málaga, just an hour from Marbella, is a true delight throughout the year – including at Christmas, when its fantastic light displays create a wonderful atmosphere – but like Marbella itself it really shines during April, May, June, September and October, the favourite months of many who know and live in this region. Clear blue skies, a soft breeze and warm but pleasant temperatures make this period an ideal time to be along Spain’s southern shores.
